The possibilities of free form natural edge furniture are seemingly endless, after delivering our bar tops to a restaurant conversion in Chester, we were asked by a regular customer if we could produce something highly individual for their ensuite shower room.

We selected a 65mm thick piece of cedar of Lebanon which was machined and treated with several coats of polyurethane varnish and hand waxed making a hard and waterproof vanity top to which a new bowl and pillar tap were fitted.

The vanity top sits on a very simple shelving unit making a very versatile and user friendly piece of furniture to a small area.

As you can see from the variety of things that can be made, if you have an idea please don’t hesitate in contacting us.

We had a piece of Pippy oak in our workshop which was under construction, a customer saw the piece and requested it for his front room, however, this meant we had to work over Christmas to get the piece ready, after sanding down and preparing the piece, the timber had to be brought home to resin as the workshop was far to cold for the resin to go off, so come Christmas morning with all the heating on full we embarked to apply several coats of resin, as the resin takes 8 hours between each coat to dry enough to apply another coat it was around the clock task and with the fumes almost killing us we finally finished it the day after boxing day.

We then delivered to a very happy customer, we are so passionate about our business and the satisfaction of our customers that we did not even let Christmas get in the way of delivering a unique piece of furniture.

English Oak – Quercus robur.

One of the most important trees that grace our countryside, it is called the king of trees and has a special place in English History, used for house building through out the centuries, it is still used today in timber framed construction, a remarkably durable timber that stands the test of time especially well.

It was used to build the first ocean going vessels that set sail from our shores on voyages of discovery.

The importance of the Oak tree cannot simply be put into words, without its presents in the English countryside we would have never been one of the most powerful country’s in the world, the English oak certainly put great into Great Briton.

English Oak,

Calculating the size of this piece of oak its approximately 230 years old, so fell as an acorn around the time Briton defeated the French at Waterloo and George 111 was king.

The world has changed beyond all recognition in this time and this piece now makes a fantastic focal point to any room / conservatory.

Finished in several coats of high strength acrylic varnish and hand finished with beeswax.

It stands on four hand forged legs made by a local blacksmith to our own design, the size of the table is 4 inches thick by 4 foot across.

This stunning coffee table is made of English Burr oak, also known as pippy oak, resin coated to look like a glass finish standing on three iron forged legs.

Oak table shown has been sold, please contact us if you are interested as similar pieces can be obtained.

We can source a variety of timber from oak , cedar, walnut, Pippy oak, and numerous others including timbers from America and New Zealand if there is anything we can help you with, we will try our utmost to deliver your needs.

The first wooden tables, in Britain, specifically designed as and called coffee tables, were made during the late Victorian era.
There is a table designed by E.W. Godwin in 1868 and made in large numbers by William Watt and Collinson and Lock which is listed as a coffee table in ‘Victorian Furniture’ by R. W. Symonds & B. B. Whineray and also in ‘The Country Life book of English Furniture’ by Edward T. Joy. If this was indeed called a coffee table at the time, it may be one of the first examples of a coffee table made in Europe. Other sources, however, merely list it as a table so it is hard to be sure. What is notable about this table is that it is not a low table at all, but is actually about 27 inches high.Another relevant factor is that, in the 20th century when coffee tables became increasingly popular, it was not unknown for the legs of tables, even antique tables, to be shortened to make a coffee table. This could falsely create the idea that coffee tables had originated at the earlier date that the table had been made.

Documents from the 17th and 18th century do not yield any mention of coffee tables. A search of Samuel Pepys Diary, (1633-1703), for instance reveals hundreds of references to the coffee house and to tables of various kinds but no reference to coffee tables. Nor can one find an example of a coffee table design in the pattern books of Thomas Sheraton or George Hepplewhite.

Our website covers all aspects or free form natural edged coffee tables, the choices of timber is varied from oak, burr elm, cedar and even imported timber from New Zealand and America, we will work with you to achieve the look that you want and will personally hand pick the timber to the size, length, thickness and the type of timber that you require, we will help you decide on the type of finish of your unique coffee table so that it will fit in with the environment that it is to be used in.

We were contacted through our website by a interior designer that has asked us for help supplying her with some exceptionally unusual timber for a bespoke modern wall art. It will consist of twenty four pieces of hand selected free form timber, once this is commissioned this will become a stunning focal point within the property.

After several e mails to our customer we have now arranged a meeting at one of our suppliers, so that she can hand pick her own individual pieces, due to the fact that she was not really sure on the type of wood she required or indeed the shape or thickness that was needed for her project, these photos are the ideas that she had but did not want all the pieces in the same timber.

wood-sculptered-pieces2 wild-wood13

After our site visit next we will upload new photos of timber chosen and work in progress.

20.11.09. Today we had a meeting with the interior designer and she has hand picked a number of lengths of Pippy oak timber, this is to be taken back to our workshop and will be worked on for several weeks to achieve a stunning modern wooden wall art/ collage, the timber is to keep all its bark for a natural look and will be finished in wax to allow the wood to move and twist when it is mounted on the wall, which is the look that the interior designer is looking for. 23.11.09. The picture we have taken does not give any indication of size, however these four pieces are 3 metres in lenght with the largest slab being over 2 foot accross, at present due to their rough sawn finish it is very difficult to see the fantastic figuring and cats paw graining on this English Oak.

The pieces will be treated for boring insects and woodworm prior to sanding and securing the original bark onto the slabs as requested by the customer, so we retain the natural effect the client is after. It is a process that will take many hours but is totally necessary as the pieces will shrink slightly once introduced to a heated environment

The pieces have now been sanded and the bark has been secured with dowls so that they cannot move or fall off once placed in situe, we are going to finish the pieces in a specially formulated resin to make them appear as if encased in glass.

These are close up pictures of the pieces after they have been sanded and prepared, more pictures will follow once the pieces have been finished.

Now with the pieces finished as shown in the picture above, they will be packaged ready for collection, once installed they will become a fantastic focal point in a Monor house in the midlands.

A monolith is a large block of stone consisting of one piece.

The term originates from the greeks where “mono” means single and “lith” means stone.

A monolith can be natural or man made, well our monoliths are unique in their design as they are not stone, but stunning pieces of natural edge timber.

At the moment I am working on a 6ft piece of oak, one side is machined flat whilst the back edge is half round.

The bark has been removed to reveal some fantastic shapes and patterns.

The front has some cat paw patterns and once resined will contain a miriad of colours.

Once finished this will be a truly stunning piece that would make a stunning focal point in any home/office.

I will post pictures of the work in progress over the next few days, then you can follow the progress and see the transformation taking place.

From an ordinary looking piece of timber into a beautiful work of art.
