Live edge or natural edge is a style of furniture where the furniture designer or craftsperson incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design of the piece. Live edge furniture often incorporates gnarly wood, such as oak , cedar and chestnut to name but a few that could not be used in conventional woodworking.
There are special challenges involved in working with this type of wood, and several methods for live edge have developed. Some leave the natural holes and cracks in the wood while other artists fill them with resins.
Live edge is a mix of “Western” and rustic furniture styles. Originally it was categorized as rustic, but the two styles have many differences.
I never realised that I would be using its timber to make live edge dining tables, it is a stunning much under rated timber and has some lovely markings.
This slab was chosen for the natural live edge for a customer. With our help they designed the stand, which we then fabricated and sprayed to match several pieces in their home.
I think the combination works well a beautiful live edge dining table.
Any of our live edge dining tables will look beautiful in any home and be a really lovely focal point.
