Resin river tables
Make a statement in your home or workplace
Beautiful, sustainable furniture
Resin river tables are a type of furniture that combines natural wood slabs, typically with the live edge (the natural, irregular edge of the wood), and epoxy resin to create a stunning visual effect resembling a river flowing through the wood. Typically, people make them this way:
1. Selection of Wood Slabs: Woodworkers select high-quality wood slabs for the tabletop, commonly choosing walnut, maple, oak, and cherry. The slabs often maintain their natural edge, known as the live edge, which enhances the character of the final piece.
2. Preparation: The drying and flattening process ensures stability and creates a smooth, level surface for the tabletop.
3.Design and Layout: The designer plans the design of the river table, considering the shape and size of the wood slabs. If the table is to have a river-like feature, the woodworker cuts the wood to create a void where the resin will be poured.
4.Creating the Mould: The pouring process requires constructing a mould around the wood slab to contain the epoxy resin. The mould must be tight and secure to prevent leaks.
5.Pouring the Resin: The manufacturer’s instructions guide the mixing of epoxy resin with a hardener. You can add pigments or dyes to achieve the desired color. Pour the resin into the void created in the wood slab. Pour it in layers to prevent excessive heat buildup and minimize bubbles. You can enhance the river-like effect by adding objects like stones or glass.
6.Curing: The resin cures for a specified period, usually several days, depending on the type of epoxy used and environmental conditions. During this time, the resin hardens and becomes transparent, creating the appearance of flowing water.
7.Finishing: Once the resin fully cures, the table removes from the mould, and trims away any excess resin. Then, it sands and polishes the surface to achieve a smooth finish. Depending on the desired look, it may apply a protective finish such as varnish or polyurethane to both the wood and resin to enhance durability and shine.
8. Assembly: Finally, the craftsman attaches the table legs or base to the tabletop, completing the construction of the live edge resin river table.
These tables have a unique aesthetic appeal, combining the natural beauty of wood with the modern, sleek look of epoxy resin. People can use them as eye-catching centrepieces in homes, offices, or commercial spaces.
